Smart Beginnings:

Early reading, play, and connection for Somali families

Our goals

‍ ‍

Smart Beginnings is an initiative led by the Sababi Institute, aimed at setting the foundations for early literacy skills and promoting interactive play among toddlers.

Our Approach

The program engages mothers through structured group meetings led by trained facilitators to strengthen caregiver knowledge, foster socio-emotional health, build confidence in using play and reading techniques, and expose children to books and materials that support pre-literacy and motor development.

Designed for young children up to the age of three, the programme challenges systemic inequalities by providing targeted developmental experiences during the most critical window of brain development among internally displaced refugees.

Programme Characteristics

Targeted Reach

Focuses on families with young children living in internally displaced persons (IDP) settlements.

Local Adaptation

Utilizes non-literate "reading" techniques and low-cost, readily available household materials to overcome literacy and resource barriers.

Community-Led

Empowers trained, local Somali female facilitators to guide sessions in accessible, camp venues; ensuring cultural fluency while actively building a grassroots workforce of early childhood practitioners.
